How to correct a VAT return mistake (suppletie)

Small VAT errors vs. formal corrections: when to roll into the next return, when to file a suppletie, and how to minimize interest and penalties.

You filed your VAT return, and a day later you noticed a mistake. The VAT figure is wrong, or you forgot some voorbelasting. Don't panic — small errors are recoverable and common. But there are two different ways to fix them, depending on the size of the mistake, and choosing the right one saves you money.

Two paths to correction

Path 1: Roll the error into your next return (small mistakes)

If the mistake is small — typically under €1,000 — you can simply correct it in your next quarterly return.

Example: You filed Q1 on 30 April and claimed €500 voorbelasting. On 1 May, you found an invoice you'd missed: another €200 voorbelasting that should have been included.

Instead of filing a formal correction, you add the missing €200 voorbelasting to your Q2 return (due 31 July). You note "correction from Q1" in your records. The Belastingdienst accepts this as a normal adjustment.

Pros:

  • Simple — no extra paperwork
  • No formal filing to the tax office
  • Typically no interest or penalty (as long as you correct promptly)

Cons:

  • You don't get your refund until the next quarter
  • If the error is intentional or part of a pattern, the Belastingdienst may object

Path 2: File a formal correction (suppletie) for larger errors

If the mistake is larger — typically over €1,000 — or if you want to correct it immediately, you file a formal aangifte suppletie.

A suppletie is a separate filing that says: "I filed a VAT return incorrectly. Here is the corrected version, and here is what I now owe."

Example: You filed Q1 and claimed no voorbelasting (a mistake). The next day, you realized you should have claimed €3,000 voorbelasting, reducing what you owe by €3,000. A suppletie corrects this retroactively.

Pros:

  • Immediate: you get the correction on the record right away
  • No waiting for the next quarter
  • Shows good faith to the Belastingdienst

Cons:

  • You pay interest on the corrected amount from the original deadline until you pay the corrected amount
  • If the error is large or chronic, you may face a penalty (though good faith typically avoids this)
  • Extra paperwork

When to file a suppletie

You should file a suppletie if:

  • The error exceeds ~€1,000 (the threshold is informal, but amounts this large trigger queries anyway)
  • You want to correct immediately (don't wait for the next quarter)
  • The error is in your favor but you want to claim it quickly (e.g., you're owed a large refund)
  • You filed a return and want to change your reported figures (a suppletie is cleaner than rolling into the next return)

The Belastingdienst publishes no official threshold — using your judgment. Errors under €500 are almost always small enough to roll into the next return. Over €2,000, file a suppletie.

How to file a suppletie

Suppleties are filed on Mijn Belastingdienst in the same place you filed the original return:

  1. Log in to Mijn Belastingdienst Zakelijk (as you would to file your regular return)
  2. Find the section for corrections. Look for "Correcties" or "Aangifte suppletie."
  3. Select the original quarter and year that you're correcting
  4. Enter the corrected figures (the way the return should have been filed)
  5. The system calculates the difference (what you now owe or are owed)
  6. Submit the suppletie and pay or wait for a refund

The form is simpler than the original return — you're just showing the difference, not re-entering everything.

File the suppletie soon after discovering the error

The sooner you file, the less interest accrues. If you wait months, interest compounds. File as soon as you spot the mistake.

Interest and penalties

When you file a suppletie, the Belastingdienst charges interest on the corrected amount from the original deadline to the suppletie filing date.

Interest rate: Roughly 0.05% per day (it varies slightly year to year, but this is the ballpark).

Example: Original deadline was 30 April. You file a suppletie on 15 June (46 days late). You owe an extra €1,000 in VAT.

  • Interest: €1,000 × 0.05% × 46 days ≈ €23

Not catastrophic, but it adds up. File the suppletie promptly.

Penalties: If the error was unintentional and you file the suppletie yourself (you're not waiting for the Belastingdienst to catch it), you typically avoid a penalty. The Belastingdienst assumes good faith. But if:

  • The error is part of a pattern (multiple corrections in a short time)
  • You filed deliberately wrong
  • You hid the mistake and the Belastingdienst found it first (not you)

...then a penalty (typically 5–10% of the amount) may apply.

Common scenarios

Scenario 1: You forgot an invoice

You filed Q1 on 30 April. On 8 May, you found an invoice from 20 March for €1,500 (including €315 VAT at 21%) that you didn't include in your return. The voorbelasting should have been €315.

Decision: Since the error is under €1,000, roll it into Q2. Include the €315 voorbelasting in your Q2 return and note the correction.

Scenario 2: You miscalculated the full amount

You filed Q2 on 31 July, claiming you owed €500. Reviewing your bookkeeping in August, you realize you miscalculated: you actually owe €2,100 (the VAT charged was higher than you thought).

Decision: The error is over €1,000. File a suppletie in August, correcting the Q2 return from €500 to €2,100. You'll owe the additional €1,600 plus interest on those days.

Scenario 3: You're getting a refund but didn't claim enough voorbelasting

You filed Q3 on 31 October, claiming a €500 refund. On 2 November, you found another €800 in voorbelasting from Q3 that you missed. Total refund should be €1,300.

Decision: This is significant (€800 additional), so file a suppletie to get the correct refund immediately. The Belastingdienst will send the additional €800 faster via suppletie than if you wait for Q4 to roll it in.

Avoiding mistakes in the first place

  • Use bookkeeping software that tags every transaction with the correct VAT rate and totals each rate automatically. Spreadsheets are error-prone.
  • Reconcile monthly. At the end of each month, check that VAT received equals VAT on invoices, and VAT paid equals VAT on expenses. Spot discrepancies early.
  • Review before submitting. Spend 5 minutes re-checking your VAT return before you hit submit. Check that totals match your bookkeeping.
  • Keep a clean invoice log. A simple spreadsheet or app that lists every invoice by date, customer, amount, and VAT rate. Print it, cross-check against your return.

Frequently asked questions

Can I file a suppletie months after the original deadline?
Yes, but interest accrues daily. The longer you wait, the more you pay in interest. File the suppletie as soon as you discover the error.
If I file a suppletie, do I also have to correct my income tax return?
Not necessarily. VAT and income tax are separate. However, if your VAT correction changes your profit (e.g., you add voorbelasting), you may need to file a correction to your income tax return too. Check with your accountant.
What if the Belastingdienst finds the mistake before I do?
The tax office will issue a *nabeffing* (supplementary assessment) with a penalty. This is much worse than you filing a suppletie yourself. Always review your returns.
Can I file multiple suppleties for the same quarter?
Yes, but it looks sloppy. The more corrections you file for one quarter, the more it signals poor administration. Avoid it by getting it right the first time.
Is there a deadline for filing a suppletie?
There's no hard deadline, but the Belastingdienst expects corrections within a reasonable time (weeks, not years). File promptly to minimize interest and show good faith.

VAT mistakes happen, especially when you're managing bookkeeping yourself. The key is spotting them quickly and correcting them promptly. Small errors roll into the next return with minimal fuss; larger ones warrant a suppletie to keep your record clean and avoid compound interest. ZZP Belasting automates VAT tracking and error-checking so you're less likely to make the mistake in the first place — but if you do, you'll catch it before deadline and fix it fast.
