The SBI code: classifying your business activity

What is an SBI code and why does it matter? Learn how to choose the right one at KVK registration and why insurers and banks rely on it.

When you register at the KVK, you'll choose an SBI code—a five-digit number that describes what your business does. It looks like a small detail, but that code flows to insurers assessing your risk, banks evaluating your creditworthiness, and government bodies determining which subsidies you can access. Getting it right from the start saves friction later.

What is an SBI code?

An SBI code (Standaard Bedrijfsindeling) is the Dutch standard business classification. It's a five-digit code—split into two groups like 62.01.09 or 74.10.11—that categorizes your main business activity.

The first three digits cover your broad sector (e.g., 62 = IT services, 74 = professional services). The last two narrow it down to your specific role (e.g., web development within IT, or graphic design within professional services).

The KVK maintains a registry of thousands of SBI codes. You'll search by keyword during registration to find the one that fits your work.

Why your SBI code matters

Insurers and insurance premiums

When you apply for professional indemnity insurance (BAV), general liability (AVB), or disability cover (AOV), insurers pull your SBI code to assess your risk profile. A software developer has different hazards than a plumber; the code signals which profession you are.

Underwriters price premiums based on typical risk for that code. If your code misrepresents your actual work—say, you register as "general business services" when you're actually a surgeon—the insurer may discover the mismatch, reject your application, or void your policy later if you make a claim.

Banks and lending

Banks use your SBI code to benchmark your business against industry standards. When you apply for a loan, they assess your creditworthiness by comparing your metrics (profit, debt, growth) against businesses with the same SBI code. A misclassified code means the bank's model can't compare you fairly, which affects interest rates and approval odds.

Government subsidies and support

The Dutch government regularly launches sector-specific support: energy-efficiency grants for certain trades, digital transformation funds for specific industries, or crisis relief for affected sectors. Eligibility often hinges on your SBI code. Misclassify yourself, and you miss opportunities you actually qualified for.

Tax treatment

While your SBI code doesn't directly determine your income tax rate, certain sectors qualify for special deductions or allowances. For example, some R&D activities have preferential rules. Misclassification can mean missing out on benefits your actual work entitled you to.

You can register multiple SBI codes

If your business genuinely spans two distinct activities—e.g., web design and copywriting—you can register up to five SBI codes at the KVK. One is your primary (the one you spend most time on or that generates most revenue). Be honest: insurers and lenders will verify your primary code, and misrepresenting it to get cheaper premiums can void coverage.

Choosing the right SBI code

The rule is simple: your SBI code should honestly describe what you actually do.

Start with the official KVK SBI search tool. Enter a keyword for your activity and review the results. Each code comes with a description. Pick the one that best matches your day-to-day work.

Examples:

  • Web development: 62.01.09 (Software programming services)
  • Graphic design: 74.10.11 (Specialised design activities)
  • Business consulting: 70.22.01 (Management and business consultancy)
  • Bookkeeping: 69.20.13 (Bookkeeping services)
  • Coaching: 85.59.03 (Other education and training activities)

If you do multiple things at significant scale, list them all—but order them honestly. Your primary SBI should be the one consuming most of your time or generating most revenue.

Don't pick a code for appearance or subsidy eligibility

It's tempting to choose a code that sounds more prestigious or that qualifies for a subsidy you like. Resist. If an insurer discovers you misclassified yourself to get cheaper premiums, they may deny claims entirely. If the tax office finds you claimed a subsidy you weren't eligible for, you'll repay it plus penalties.

Finding your SBI code at KVK registration

When you register at the KVK, the SBI code is one of several decisions you'll make. Book your appointment, bring ID and proof of address, pay around €80, and when asked "What is your business activity?" — you'll have your code ready from the search tool.

If you're unsure between two codes, ask the KVK staff in person. They're accustomed to the question and can clarify the difference.

Changing or adding an SBI code

Your business evolves. Maybe you added a new service line, pivoted focus, or realized your original code was a poor fit. You can update it anytime:

  1. Log into your KVK account online or visit your local KVK office
  2. Request to add or change an SBI code
  3. The change typically takes effect within days
  4. Notify your accountant, insurer, and bank so they update their records

Cost: Usually free. Some changes incur a small administrative fee; the KVK will advise.

Belastingdienst: The tax office receives the update automatically from the KVK within a few days. No separate notification needed, but it's good practice to inform your accountant.

There is no penalty for updating your code honestly. The worst mistake is keeping a wrong code just to avoid a phone call.

Frequently asked questions

What if my business doesn't fit neatly into any code?
Look for codes tagged 'n.e.c.' (not elsewhere classified) or catch-all categories like '82.19.99' (other professional, scientific and technical activities). If stuck, contact the KVK directly—they can suggest the closest fit for your work.
Can I register a business without an SBI code?
No. You must provide an SBI code at KVK registration. It's mandatory. Use the official search tool beforehand, or the KVK can help you pick one during your in-person appointment.
If I change my SBI code, do I need to tell the tax office separately?
No. The Belastingdienst receives your change automatically from the KVK within days. But inform your accountant or bookkeeper so they can update your file.
Does my SBI code affect my personal income tax rate?
Not directly. Your income tax bracket is based on your profit, not your SBI. However, some sectors may qualify for special deductions—confirm with your accountant if any apply to you.

Your SBI code is a quiet but important piece of your business profile. Spend five minutes finding the right one at registration, and keep it accurate as your business evolves. It protects you from insurance mispricing, helps you access subsidies you qualify for, and keeps auditors off your back.
